Josh Pulman is not a "purist" but does prefer to get the shot done in camera. He looks for the magnificence and splendour of nature as well as man’s influence and interaction with landscape. Use and misuse of photographic techniques are the tools of his trade.
The Artist

Josh Pulman has been involved with photography for twenty years. The fascination started when he was travelling solo in South America. With only an Olympus trip as a constant companion and six rolls of film to last six months, the daily photograph became an important part of the day.

Returning to the UK, he took a night class in b/w techniques and the bug really began to grow from a part time interest to full time obsession, thence to a profession. He did a BA Hons degree at the Polytechnic of Central London (now University of Westminster). After that he got a job as a full time assistant for two years.

Having developed a unique in-camera distortion technique, he worked for London advertising and design companies gaining commissions from among others Nike, Schweppes and American Express.
The Pictures

Themes running through his work are landscape, light and texture. A good photograph elevates the subject to something super real and sometimes surreal. Being in the right place at the right time to capture this is sometimes chance but more often not.

All photographs are a manipulation of reality. From the framing of a subject, to type of film chosen, exposure and timing are all choices which photographers make. Accidents will happen and a certain skill is needed to see when it is a good accident and when it is a mistake. Josh is not a "purist" but loves to get the shot done in camera if possible. The magnificence and splendour of nature are an ever present theme. Also apparent is man’s influence and interaction with landscape. Sometimes less detail conveys more emotion and feeling.

The Future

With the onslaught of digital media, the possibilities for manipulation have increased infinitely. Josh Pulman has embraced this with his series of Twisted Images using equipment in a way it was not designed to be used. The judicial use and misuse of photographic techniques applied with artistic sense creates images ranging from straight photography to pure imagination.
